Propagation Basics

Make new plants for free! Propagation is a fun and easy way to grow your collection.

Water Propagation

This is the easiest method for many vining plants like Pothos and Philodendrons. Simply take a cutting with a few leaves and at least one node (the little bump where the leaf meets the stem). Place the cutting in a jar of water, making sure the node is submerged. Change the water weekly, and in a few weeks, you'll see roots begin to grow. Once the roots are a few inches long, you can plant your new baby plant in soil.

Soil Propagation

For succulents, soil propagation is often more successful. You can gently twist off a healthy leaf from the stem. Let the leaf sit out for a few days to callous over, then simply lay it on top of some succulent soil. Mist it every few days, and soon you'll see tiny roots and a new baby plant begin to form at the base of the leaf.
