Understanding Succulents

Succulents store water in their thick, fleshy leaves, stems, or roots, allowing them to survive in arid conditions. This adaptation makes them perfect for forgetful waterers or those new to plant care. Cacti are a type of succulent with unique features like spines and areoles.

Light Requirements

Most succulents and cacti need bright light - at least 6 hours daily. A south or west-facing window is ideal. If your succulents are stretching or losing color, they need more light. Some varieties, like Haworthias and Gasterias, tolerate lower light conditions.

Watering Wisdom

The "soak and dry" method works best: water thoroughly until it drains from the bottom, then wait until the soil is completely dry before watering again. This might be every 1-2 weeks in summer and every 3-4 weeks in winter. Overwatering is the number one killer of succulents.

Soil and Containers

Use well-draining soil specifically designed for cacti and succulents, or mix regular potting soil with perlite or coarse sand. Always use pots with drainage holes. Terra cotta pots are excellent as they allow soil to dry out faster. Avoid glass containers without drainage.
